Laser Vein Treatment

Laser therapy is effective for removing most spider veins

Spider veins are small, web-like red veins that are visible on the surface of the skin. While they are mostly harmless, they can ruin the appearance of your skin. Many men and women feel self-conscious when they have spider veins because they can severely discolor the skin.

At Renew Facial Aesthetics, we are reputed as one of the premier laser vein removal treatment providers in Southlake, Texas. Dr. Alexis Gordon, is a board-certified physician and surgeon in Texas. You can trust her for premium-quality care.

Why do spider veins form?

Telangiectasia, more commonly called spider veins, is a type of venous condition. It occurs when the small veins located at the surface of the skin get damaged and the blood begins to pool.

Healthy veins transport blood from the organs to the heart, but when the walls of the veins are damaged, the blood may start to pool in the same place or flow backward, causing venous conditions like spider veins. As more blood pools in the veins, your spider veins become darker and more visible.

The good news is, spider veins are seldom life-threatening. With timely laser treatment, you can get rid of spider veins and make your skin blemish-free and flawless again.

Using the Aerolase non-ablative laser to treat spider veins

Our board-certified specialist at Renew Facial Aesthetics uses the patented Aerolase Nd: YAG LightPod laser 650 Microsecond Technology® to provide laser vein treatment.

The 1064nm laser, which functions on 650-microsecond pulse durations, directs short and quick bursts of laser pulses onto the skin. The heat from this laser stimulates the clotting of the spider veins. This coagulation effectively blocks the veins, preventing fresh blood from entering the veins. When the access to blood is blocked, the vein starts to dry-up and is finally thrown out of your body through the lymphatic system.

The laser heat also triggers the production of collagen in the skin, which implements a wound healing mechanism. The collagen stimulates the production of fresh, healthy, and young skin cells in the place of the discolored skin where the spider veins were present. Over the course of a few weeks, you’ll see a drastic reduction in skin discoloration, scars, and marks.

Benefits of laser vein treatment

The Aerolase laser is very gentle on the skin and causes only a mild prickling sensation. As a non-ablative laser, it involves:

  • Shorter treatment time
  • Less painful vein treatment procedure
  • No bleeding during the procedure
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Quicker return to work
  • Almost negligible chances of infection and complications

In just a handful of treatments, which are spaced 2-4 weeks apart, you can effectively treat spider veins all over the body and restore your skin to its optimal health and appearance. Contact us to schedule a session.

How to prepare for the treatment

Just before the session:

  • Visit your physician to get a complete health check and be cleared for the treatment
  • Stop taking any steroids, medications, or anticoagulants that can affect the clotting of the veins
  • Don’t smoke or drink alcohol for a few days before the treatment

During the procedure

The session will start by applying numbing cream on the treatment site. This will reduce any discomfort which you may otherwise experience during the procedure. Then, the laser applicator will be slowly moved across the skin. As the laser light permeates the skin, the heat coagulates your spider veins, closing them off.

After-treatment care

You are advised to follow these aftercare tips to facilitate faster healing:

  • Use ice packs to reduce the swelling and tenderness — these symptoms should subside in 1-2 days
  • Keep your legs elevated as often as you can
  • Wear compression stockings for 3-6 weeks. We can recommend the best compression socks for you
  • Don’t indulge in very strenuous exercise, but don’t become inactive either. Walking and low-impact exercises can actually help with healing.
  • Avoid activities that involve standing for hours
  • Moisturize your skin frequently (SPF 30+)
  • Postpone any other laser treatments or cosmetic treatments by a month

Can spider veins recur after laser vein treatment?

The treated spider veins can’t recur since they don’t exist post-treatment. The laser heat essentially kills the veins and the remnants are thrown out of the body by the lymphatic system. However, spider veins can form again in the same region or another part of your body. In such cases, you will need to come in for another treatment.

Our Southlake med spa, led by Dr. Gordon, is highly-experienced in helping patients of all ages and with various dermatological conditions. We can help you treat spider veins.
